How to Register Your Pet in Dubai: Microchip, Licence and Annual Renewal (2026)
Dubai requires cats and dogs to be microchipped and licensed, and the licence is renewed every year. What you need, where to do it, what owners report paying, and how to keep track of the renewal date.

Do I have to register my pet in Dubai?
Yes. Dubai Municipality requires cats and dogs to carry an ISO microchip, to be vaccinated, and to hold a pet licence that is renewed every year. This applies whether you bought your pet here, adopted it, or brought it with you when you moved.
Most owners only discover this when someone asks for proof: a landlord at contract renewal, a boarding kennel before a holiday, a groomer, or an airline when they leave the country. At that point the paperwork becomes urgent.
Penalties for keeping an unregistered animal have been reported in the range of a few hundred dirhams for a first offence. Enforcement and amounts change, so treat any figure you read online, including here, as a starting point and confirm the current position with Dubai Municipality on 800900 before you rely on it.
Abu Dhabi and Sharjah run their own systems, so registering in Dubai does not cover you in another emirate. If you move between emirates, ask your new municipality what it needs.
What do I need before I start?
A microchip. It is an ISO-standard chip about the size of a grain of rice, placed under the skin between the shoulder blades by a licensed vet. It takes a minute and does not need anaesthetic. The chip number is what links your pet to you, so it has to be done before anything else.
Vaccinations that are current. For dogs that usually means rabies plus the DHPP group; for cats, rabies plus the flu and enteritis group. If your pet is overdue, the clinic will vaccinate first and register after.
Your Emirates ID, or a passport with a valid UAE residence visa. The registration is held against your identity, which is why a friend cannot do it for you.
Your pet's vaccination card or health record, showing dates and the vet who gave them. If you moved here with your pet, bring the import paperwork too.
If you do not know whether your pet already has a chip, any vet can scan for one in seconds. Animals adopted from UAE shelters are often chipped already.
Where do I actually register?
There are two routes, and the easier one is through a vet.
Through a licensed veterinary clinic. Most private clinics in Dubai handle microchipping, vaccination and the municipality submission in the same visit, and many list it as a package. This is the route most owners take because the clinic already has the chip number and vaccination dates on file.
Yourself, online. Dubai Municipality services are reachable at dm.gov.ae with UAE Pass, and pet registration also appears in the Dubai Now app. You will be asked for the microchip number, vaccination details and your Emirates ID.
Dubai Municipality also runs its own veterinary clinics, including Al Khawaneej and Hatta, with appointments requested through the municipality website. Pet consultation hours are limited compared with private clinics, so check the current schedule before you plan around it.
Whichever route you take, keep the confirmation. It is the document a landlord or a kennel will ask to see.
What does it cost?
The municipality registration fee itself is small. Clinics publish it as a nominal amount plus the usual knowledge and innovation fees and VAT. The cost you actually feel is the veterinary work around it.
Microchipping is commonly quoted in the range of roughly AED 50 to AED 200 depending on the clinic, and vaccinations are charged separately per shot. A first visit that includes a chip, the core vaccinations and the registration submission typically lands somewhere in the low hundreds of dirhams.
Prices vary widely between clinics for the same work, so it is worth calling two or three. Ask for the total including the chip, the vaccinations your pet is due, the municipality fee and VAT, rather than for a single line item.
These figures are what clinics and owners publish at the time of writing, not an official price list. Confirm with the clinic when you book and with Dubai Municipality for the government portion.
How often do I have to renew it?
Every year, alongside the annual vaccinations. In practice the renewal and the booster visit happen together, which is why the date to remember is your pet's vaccination anniversary.
This is where most owners slip. Nobody sends you a letter, the renewal is eleven months away when you do it, and the reminder that eventually arrives is a landlord asking for documents you do not have.
Two things make it stick. Put the vaccination date in your phone the day it happens, and keep the registration confirmation in the same place as the vaccination card so one search finds both.
If you keep your pet's records in OnePass Pet, the vaccination and deworming dates you enter generate a notification before the next one is due, and the same record produces a shareable health card you can send to a kennel or a groomer without giving them anything else.
Frequently asked questions
My pet was chipped in another country. Does it count? Usually yes if the chip meets the ISO standard used here, which most European and Gulf chips do. Some chips from the United States use a different frequency. Ask your vet to scan it; if the scanner cannot read it, you will need a new chip.
I adopted from a shelter. Am I already registered? The animal may be chipped, but the chip is often still registered to the shelter. Transferring it to your name is a separate step, so ask the shelter what they have done and what is left for you.
Do I have to register a cat that never goes outside? The requirement covers cats as well as dogs. Indoor cats also get lost, and the chip is what gets them back.
Is there a limit on how many pets I can keep? Dubai has kept rules on the number of animals per home, and some communities and landlords add their own restrictions on top. Check your tenancy contract and community rules as well as the municipality position.
What about banned breeds? Certain breeds are restricted for import and ownership in the UAE, and the list has changed over time. If you are buying or importing a specific breed, confirm its current status before you commit.
Where do I find a vet that handles registration? Most clinics do. The clinics we list across Dubai, with ratings, phone numbers and opening hours, are at onepasspet.com/dubai/vet.
